Duncan Clark & Beckett were approached by the head teacher of Frobisher School in 2006 to prepare designs for initially some internal alterations to the toilets and changing facilities. After successfully carrying out this project Duncan Clark & Beckett were employed to carry out a further 3 schemes for Frobisher school including the construction of an externally storage compound, alterations to the school kitchen combined with an extension to the school ICT suit and finally an extension to create a new front entrance lobby and reception area. The clients brief for this scheme involved creating a new reception lobby for handling visitors to the school, while also remodeling the schools existing administration staff facilities to create private offices for the head teacher and deputy heads.
The design was developed to extend forward from the existing frontage of the school, extending with a quarter arc plan form around two existing walls. The extension created a new single reception room with a glazed band of windows around the perimeter. The new reception room was located to enable us to re-organise the existing office area to create a new dual frontage reception desk serving the reception and the interior of the school.
The extension was constructed using a facing brick plinth to match the existing school walling, which was constructed up to window sill level. Above the plinth brickwork a ribbon window ran around the perimeter of the extension, which incorporated a new double door entrance. The roof of the extension over hung the curved plan to create a enlarged eaves detail which provided a covered canopy. The roof was supported on a series of slender steel posts which were positioned internally in an attempt to create the appearance of a floating roof. The roof itself was an open roof with a glazed feature window within a gablet. The roof was covered with a concrete interlocking tile to match that used on the existing school, which was surrounded by a single ply lead effect apron roof.
